Reading over the summer

As the summer term draws to a close, now is a great time to build reading confidence and enjoyment at home. At Hayes, we encourage families to make reading a regular, relaxed part of the day—whether that’s sharing a story at bedtime, reading together after dinner, or taking a book along for a short trip to the park. Small, consistent moments help children develop fluency, vocabulary and a love of stories that lasts beyond the school year.

Reading over the summer doesn’t need to be complicated. Aim for short sessions that fit around your routine, such as 10–20 minutes a day, and let your child choose what to read whenever possible. For younger readers, picture books and familiar series can provide reassurance and momentum, while for older primary children, mixing fiction with non-fiction (such as animals, space, or how things work) can support curiosity and comprehension. Remember to celebrate effort, not just accuracy, and encourage your child to talk about what they’ve read.
