Protected Characteristics at Hayes School
Protected Characteristics are aspects of a person's identity that makes them who they are.
Personal traits and beliefs that are defined by applicable law. The person is protected from discrimination or harassment.
The following nine Characteristics in the UK that are protected under the Equality Act 2010 are;
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or Belief
- Sex
- Sex Orientation
The key is to teach the values behind the laws not the specific laws themselves.
At Hayes School we ensure our children know any form of discrimination is not tolerated within school and we enrich our children with age appropriate knowledge and understanding of Protected Characteristics.
We explore the concepts of diversity within a range of books to support teaching the nine Protected Characteristics.
How we teach the Protected Characteristics at Hayes School
At Hayes, we teach the Protected Characteristics through assemblies and our PSHRE curriculum whilst giving our children the voice to explore, discuss, share views and question for a deeper knowledge and understanding so they can implement fairness and equality at all times.
All content is taught to our children using age appropriate language and in a child friendly way so our children understand and value these important concepts, ensuring they are all caring, considerate citizens throughout life.

They are read as class texts throughout the year and the stories encourage positive and guided discussions of the protected characteristics.
