Science stimulates and excites children’s curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. It links direct practical experience with ideas, and therefore encourages children’s interest at many levels. At Hayes School, we follow the Rising Star scheme of work, which mirrors the National Curriculum and has a strong emphasis on scientific enquiry and investigation. Each year group starts a new topic every half term, which means a total of six different topics are taught each year. During the Foundation years, science is mainly experiential. Children are taught to discriminate, classify, recognise relationships and select information from a variety of sources. They develop skills in hypothesising, testing, evaluating ideas, and communicating using scientific language, drawings, charts and tables.
