French is introduced in Key Stage 2. We believe that it is very important for children to gain an understanding of the skills involved in learning a new language. The main aim of teaching French is to develop children's linguistic competence.  Initially, children learn to introduce themselves and to greet others. They begin to work on sounds and spellings, and use the simple language of classroom interaction. By the end of Year 6, children will be expected to master basic grammar and accurate pronunciation and to converse, present, read and write in the language. The lessons are taught in a fun, practical way using a variety of songs and games to help the children to learn a new language. We aim to teach all children in KS2 about the culture as well as the language.
